Georgia on my Mind

Uw dienaar betreedt tijdelijk nieuwe paden: tot 10 september aanstaande zal hij te vinden zijn in Georgië. Het gaat hier niet over de door Ray Charles bezongen staat in Noord Amerika, maar wel over dat onbekende, voormalige Sovjetland ten oosten van de Zwarte zee, waarvan een Nederlandse mevrouw de first lady is. Over enkele weken mag je op deze bladzijden verslagen uit de Caucasus verwachten, tot dan houden we het bij een geknipte en geplakte songtekst van één van de meesters. Pictures of the Week – Vezo People

The Vezo is the term the semi-nomadic coastal people of southern Madagascar use to refer to people that have become accustomed to live from sea fishing. “Vezo” literally means the people who fish, but also has been known to mean ‘to struggle with the sea’.

They currently populate most of the littoral zone along Madagascar’s west coast between Toliara and Mahajanga.

The Vezo speak a dialect of the Malagasy language, which is a branch of the Malayo-polynesian language group derived from the Barito languages, spoken in southern Borneo.

The Tsingy of Ankarana

Ankarana Reserve is a small, partially vegetated plateau in northern Madagascar composed of 150-million-year-old middle Jurassic limestone.

With an average annual rainfall of about 2,000 millimetres, the underlying rocks are susceptible to erosion, thereby producing caves and underground rivers—a karst topography.

The rugged relief and the dense vegetation have helped protect the region from human intrusion.
