  Pictures of the Week – An African Journey

  This weeks Pictures of the Week will take you on an African journey. It is a selection that I stashed away just for this kind of an occasion. What’s the occasion? You might ask. I’m on a holiday and not particularly in a working mood. But anyways, welcome in Africa!

  Schaamteloze zelfpromotie

  Geef toe! Waarom gaat een mens op reis? Om kinderlijke fantasieën bewaarheid te zien. Om het echte avontuur puur te proeven. Om iets te doen dat een ander niet doet. Daarom, ja! De Danakil is zoiets. Bijna tachtig jaar nadat Wilfred Thesiger, de laatste der Victoriaanse ontdekkingsreizigers, als eerste Europeaan door de Danakil Depressie trok, gaan wij er ook heen. Hoewel het gebied reeds lang hoog scoort in het lijstje van uitersten – heetste, laagste en ontoegankelijkste zijn maar enkele van deze extremen – is het bijna niet te vinden tussen de bestemmingen van reisorganisaties.

  Pictures of the Week

  Touba is a city in central Senegal. It is the holy city of Mouridism and the burial place of its founder, Shaikh Aamadu Bàmba Mbàkke. Next to his tomb lies a large mosque, completed in 1963.

  

  Aamadu Bàmba founded Touba in 1887. The holy site remained a tiny, isolated place in the wilderness until his death and burial at the site of the Great Mosque, 40 years later. The Great Mosque was finally completed in 1963 and since its inauguration the city has grown at a rapid pace.

  

  Touba is the holy city of Mouridism. Aamadu Bàmba Mbàkke, Senegal’s most famous Sufi, was more than a spiritual master; he had a social mission as well, that of rescuing society from colonial alienation and returning it to the “Straight Path” of Islam. The city of Touba played a major role in both these endeavors.
